The Babymoon

I’m never entirely sure what holiday this term refers to, but in my case I’m applying it to our pregnancy holiday – the last holiday (at least for the foreseeable future) in which we only had ourselves to please.

I can totally see why some people would just want to go somewhere and completely chill. We wanted a bit of that, but also a bit of travelling around, as we figured now was the time to get that out of our system.

Our choice for this holiday was Jordan in November. We’d never been but it seemed to tick all of our boxes – mid haul flight, nice temperature at that time of year, good mix of places we could go to relax and places we could explore. We also thought it was somewhere we probably wouldn’t take young kids to, so it might be a while before we considered it again.

We loved it! It really was perfect as a pregnant traveller. We hired a car and started in Amman for a few nights visiting the sights in the city and an amazing Roman town called Jerash. Then we drove to a posh Dead Sea hotel that seemed to be quite a popular choice for fellow babymooners! Petra followed – this was tiring as a lot of walking is involved, but absolutely amazing. Then down to the Red Sea and another few days of relaxation.

I arranged our itinerary so we weren’t full on all the time, but we still managed to see all the big sights. The main thing we missed that we would have done if I was not pregnant was desert camping at Wadi Rum – I decided it would be better to avoid a bouncy 4×4 ride just in case.

But if you want one last “adventure” as a couple it really was a great destination. It feels safe, the roads were good, you are never too far from a big town. It’s a mainly dry country so you don’t feel like you are missing out on a drink when you go out. The food was brilliant, but very chick pea heavy – so be warned if you are suffering any pregnancy related gastric issues!

We travelled to Jordan when I was 26-28 weeks pregnant (in a low risk pregnancy). I had a letter from my midwife, but no one asked for it on the flights. Only you can make the call if travelling when pregnant is right for you, but if you feel fit and well you will have a fantastic time.
